The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra:
Om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim
pusti-vardhanam urvarukam iva bandhanan
mrtyo muksiya mamrtat
Meaning
‘Om’ is an eternal, universal sound, the Brahman and it denotes the supreme spirit, also called as almighty.
tryambakam = the three-eyed Lord Shiva.
yajamahe = “we worship, we sacrifice”
sugandhim = “the fragrant, the virtuous, the supreme being”.
pusti-vardhanam = “The Bestower of nourishment, wealth and perfection”.
urvarukam = “fruit, a kind of cucumber”
iva = “as”
bandhanan = “from bondage, from the stalk/stem”
mrtyoh = “from death”
muksiya = “may I be freed/released”
Ma ‘mrtat = “Attains SALVATION”
It is believed if you religiously chant this mantra, then Lord Shiva creates a protective shield around you that protects you from sudden death and bestows health, wealth, and peace.
